1. Original Name: Blaby Special.

2. History: An heirloom variety that was grown at Shoult’s Farm in the village of Blaby (Leicestershire, England) until the end of World War II. It was one of the most popular tomato varieties then. The farm ceased operations after the war and the variety was not distributed for over 60 years.

But the seeds were preserved in a seed bank in the Netherlands. In 2006, Russel Sharp of Lancaster University received these seeds and the variety was brought back to cultivation.

3. Plant Specifications: Mid-season. A good choice for a greenhouse and outdoors. Tall bush, indeterminate, growing up to 6 feet (180 cm) tall. Thick stem, regular leaf. Regular truss, crowded trusses.

4. Training Instructions: It is preferable to train the bush to two main stems. Staking and pruning are a must.

5. Shape and Weight: Round and smooth fruits. There can be 4-9 fruits per crowded truss. Weight: 2-2.8 oz. (60-80 g).

6. Color: Bright red. Red in a cut as well.

7. Flavor Profile: Perfect for those who love red tomatoes and typical taste and flavor of heirloom varieties. Well-balanced sweetness and tartness. Meaty and firm walls.

8. Culinary Use: Small-sized fruits (resembling apples) being a good choice for canning whole tomatoes, transportation or markets. The fruits can keep well. Good for thick sauces, paste or borscht dressing. These fruits are not hard and are good for salads. Their smooth shape and thick walls help them keep well.
